Munny Monday - Chinese Paper

Weekly Features

I’m such a sucker for Chinese Scripture! This Munny looks like it took forever to do but the end result is amazing. I love the paper the paper is placed out and that huge red symbol is the focal point.

A Word From The Artist

My name is Eric, I’m from Milwaukee WI. I got into toys/collecting about a 2½ years ago.

My inspiration comes from the Chinese symbols themselves. I’ve always been fascinated by letters, their shapes and the way the flow together. When I was in high school I tried to teach myself to write in Chinese, but that never came about.

I began my Chinese paper customs about a year ago. I work for a company that had these newspapers packed in with some of the parts that we import. I experimented with it, and my first paper custom was a 3″ dunny I ended up trading as a part of the Kid Robot Message Board trade. After seeing the results, I began customizing more 3″ dunnys, 11 in total. At the same time i worked on 2 8″ dunnys that turned out even better.

Recently, I have been commissioned for quite a few of these. I have done a munny for a new art store/toy shop here in Milwaukee (Hot Pop), and a total of 5 mini munnys for Kid Robot board members. I’ll soon be working on a Gosho that will be in a show in Edmonton, Canada.

The process of making these customs is simple but tedious. I search through my stash of papers, finding bits that i think will work well. Most of it is cutting strips of text. I then apply paper cement to the strips and lay them in a pattern. Most of the time I don’t have a specific idea, I just work and get inspiration from what I see before me. Once I am finished with the design, I seal it to make sure no paper will peal, and to preserve the colors and text. It takes about 15-20 hours to do a larger piece, and about 5-10 hours for a mini munny or 3″ dunny.

Check out more shots after the jump!

In case you’re slacking, check out some more Munny Mondays you may have missed.
