Ennis School U.S. On Dan Dare

Weekly Features

Garth Ennis (of Preacher, The Boys, and Hellblazer fame) had recently taken the reigns in revamping “The Quintiscential British Hero,” Dan Dare for Virgin Comics. Many here in the states are unfamiliar with Dan Dare, but Ennis explained “He is our Captain America, our Superman, or Batman. So how is it that vast majority of Americans are oblivious to a character that is so influential and has been around for nearly 60 years? Ennis explained that the character of Dan Dare, essentially a upperclass British gentlemen-ly military officer in a futuristic space setting,  is more easily relatable to British audiences, whereas “caped” heroes seem to appeal better to U.S. crowds.

Virgin held a press conference with Garth Ennis and Peter Hampston (son of the creator, Frank Hampston) at the con to better explain the character to the New York audience and to announce that when they are finished with the current 7 issue story arc, they do plan to make more. An Omnibus collection with this current arc will be out this Christmas according to Virgin Chief Marketing Officer, Larry Lieberman.
