Wiki Wednesday: Lina Medina - The 5 Year Old Who Gave Birth

Weekly Features

The above picture was taken of Peruvian girl Lina Medina when she was only 5 years old. Technically, 5 years, 7 months, and 21 days. And she was also 7 months pregnant at the time. Wait, what?

Long story short: she hit puberty early, got pregnant, her family took her to the hospital because they thought her swelling belly was a tumor, they find out she’s pregnant, shit hits the fan. In a nutshell.

She gave birth by C-section to a boy named Gerardo who was raised thinking that his mom was his sister. When he was 10, they dropped the bomb on him.

“Oh, hey… by the way… that girl you thought was your sister for 10 years, well…. she’s actually your mom. We woulda’ told you sooner, but we didn’t want their to be any, ya’ know… awkwardness.”

Gerardo passed away at the age of 40 from bone marrow disease, but Lina is still alive and living in Peru. She’s 74.

And if you’re wondering how this could all be possible, it’s called Precocious puberty. It’s like regular puberty, only more precocious. And early. As for the father, well, to this day no one really knows who he is. Lina’s father was arrested for rape, but there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him. This is probably one of those mysteries that’ll go down in history, but I think we’re all pretty sure it was totally the dad.
